For a while, kirizal had an Apple eMate (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/messagepad/stats/emate_300.html). It was really an awesome machine for writing. 24 hours of battery life or 12 with the backlight. Fully solid-state. A good keyboard.
The Newton OS is definitely interesting, and yeah, it's handwriting recognition kicks Tablet PC hard. Not that it'd be difficult. My PalmOS gizmo kicks Tablet PC.
