I received not one, but two, rejections today. Both "Freeing the Mountain" and "Running and Falling" are back. I haven't decided where they go next yet. "Freeing the Mountain" either goes to Strange Horizons or to beta-readers. "Running and Falling" will take some research before I decide.

Tonight was the first performance of my improv class's graduation show. One more and I'm done.

Sorry about the rejections, lovey.

So how was the show??

The show was ok. The goal was to do something that we couldn't have done a year ago. By that extremely modest measure, we succeeded. There's always something we could have done better. However, we got through 40 minutes non-stop. It could have been worse.

Aw, nuts. But maybe beta readers will help.

Did you improv like mad? Did you mess with old I Want Improv To Be Predictable?

Well, a problem with I Want Improv To Be Predictable is that he doesn't really accept offers from his scene partners. The whole working with his scene partner thing is something he's still getting a grasp of. This really puts a cap on how much I'm able to influence any scene we're in together.

In any case, as his scene partner, my job isn't to mess with him. It's to make him look brilliant. That my offers are not such that he accepts them and builds on them makes that job hard. He also makes improv much harder for himself in the process. (Given half a chance, I can make him look better than he could look by himself. Two heads are better than one.)

One scene we did together, he tagged me with "doesn't pay attention and doesn't listen to a thing he says." He's telling me, "I don't want you build a relationship with me over the course of the scene. You mean nothing to me." This makes it very hard to come up with an emotionally satisfying scene because I have to spend the scene not understanding or not hearing a word he says. (i.e., I have to trust that he wants me to do this because he has something brilliant in mind.) I'm sure that Andrea Martin could have spun comic gold with this offer. However, I'm not Andrea Martin.

Anyway, one more show...

(PS--I love the Les Miserables reference. On purpose?)

Yes. Of course, now, it should be "Tonight, tonight, won't be just any night."

Sorry to hear about those, man. Rejections just suck.

If you need a beta-reader, hit me up.

Thanks. Don't be surprised if "Freeing the Mountain" ends up in your mailbox. I haven't decided yet. This one, or the other story that no one has beta-read yet actually, or, frankly, both. (I'm still deciding if I have any questions about these stories that I need answered.)
